Littlehampton's Sarah Kempson thought her dream of representing her country at senior level was over – that was until she discovered beach soccer.

Kempson, who played for Southampton and Chelsea alongside the likes of Casey Stoney during her grass football career, represented England at U23 level but never quite made it to the top level of the game.

If Kempson had been told back then that she would be playing for Team GB in beach soccer at the inaugural World Beach Games in Doha, she would have never believed a word.

“It’s the pinnacle of my career,” said Kempson.

“Representing England has been amazing, but to have the accolade of representing Team GB alongside other athletes at a multi-sport event is incredible.

“Without fail, all of us are going out there as a squad knowing that we’re capable of winning the gold medal.”

Team GB will compete across seven disciplines in Doha, as 97 countries from five continents come together for the Association of National Olympic Committees’ (ANOC) first-ever World Beach Games, taking place from October 12-16.

Alongside beach soccer, Team GB will be represented in aquathlon, bouldering, kitefoil racing, skateboarding, water ski and wakeboard and for most of the Team GB athletes selected, it will be their first opportunity to compete at a multi-sport Games.

While she is excited to compete, Kempson knew the opportunity would have never come about if it wasn’t for the hard work and perseverance of the national team head coach, Perry Northeast.

“I started beach soccer about seven or eight years ago when Perry, my Portsmouth manager at the time, introduced me to the game. I found my love for beach soccer and I’m lucky enough to be in this squad now,” added Kempson.

“I think most of the team would say that without him, we wouldn’t be here today.

“I owe a lot to him for being where I am. For all of us, this is an incredible achievement.”
