Brentford fans were among those watching on proudly as Ollie Watkins enjoyed a dream England debut – and the Bees are set to benefit financially from their former star’s exploits.

The 25-year-old was introduced from the bench against San Marino on Thursday evening and slotted home the Three Lions’ final goal in a 5-0 rout at Wembley.

Watkins’ call-up was just reward for an impressive first Premier League season with Aston Villa, who he joined from Brentford for £28m in the summer.

The deal included up to £5m in add-ons and The Athletic have reported international appearances are among the areas covered by such clauses.

Brentford will reportedly earn £1m if Watkins starts for England and £500,000 when he appears as a substitute, up to a small number of caps, with Exeter City owed 15% of the fee due to the terms of the deal which took the striker to west London from Devon in 2017.

Watkins, who scored 26 goals for the Bees last season, said of his debut strike: “It’s unbelievable, what I have dreamt about. All day in the hotel I was just thinking that I hope to get a chance to come on, enjoy it and get the opportunity to score. I'm speechless to be honest.

"It's been a good journey. I just feel honoured that I can come out here and play for my country with these players and score on my debut. Over the moon.

"I just wanted to get on pitch for a start. I have and can't believe it.

“I'm going to take each game as it comes, focus on my club form, play consistently for Aston Villa, score for them, help the team push up the table and hopefully get into Europe and take it from there."

Also earning his first cap on Thursday evening was Ethan Pinnock, who started for Jamaica against the USA in Austria.

The Bees defender played the first 64 minutes of a 4-1 defeat and has become the ninth member of the current squad to have represented their country while a Brentford player.

Among them is Christian Norgaard, who came off the bench for Denmark in their 2-0 win over Israel, though fellow Bees Mathias Jensen and Henrik Dalsgaard did not add to their respective tallies of international appearances.
