Brentford showed signs of their ‘unstoppable’ best in Saturday’s thumping 7-2 win over Wycombe, according to prolific marksman Ivan Toney.

The Championship’s top scorer added another two to his tally at the Community Stadium – which may yet become a hat-trick amid confusion over the Bees’ second goal, which saw Tariqe Fosu convert the rebound after Toney’s shot was saved.

Whether the ball was over the line or not before Fosu’s intervention will be decided elsewhere but there was no doubt about the identity of the scorers after the break as Thomas Frank’s men ran riot.

Having gone into the interval locked at 2-2 – Ethan Pinnock having opened the scoring before the disputed second goal, with Wycombe hitting back on both occasions – Fosu drilled home the hosts’ third before Toney extended the lead from the penalty spot.

Three goals in the final 10 minutes added gloss to the scoreline as Sergi Canos, Toney and Josh Dasilva completed the rout against the division’s bottom side.

The match marked a welcome return to form for Toney, back in the goals for the first time in 2021, and the striker was delighted by his side’s display.

“If we want to get to the Premier League, we have to show character in certain games and we showed that,” he said.

“In certain games, we haven’t hit top gear and still come out with results. As soon as we hit the gear we need, we can be unstoppable.

“The sooner we hit that, the better. We showed parts of that and hopefully it continues.

“Fair play to them (Wycombe), they stuck to their task and they were energetic all over the pitch. The man-marking they do paid off until half time but we played through that and our quality shone through for us to get the result we deserved.”

Toney now has 18 Championship goals for the season – which may soon become 19 if the verdict goes his way on Brentford’s second.

With the race for the division’s golden boot set to be hotly-contested – Toney is currently one clear of Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong – the 24-year-old was in no doubt as to his own haul for the afternoon.

“It’s three goals, everyone in the changing rooms is saying it’s three goals,” he said.

“T (Tariqe Fosu) is like a brother to me and even he admitted it went over the line. Whoever’s in charge of changing it, I’m sure they will.”

The relentless nature of the season shows no sign of letting up and the Bees are back in action at home to Bristol City on Wednesday, with Toney urging his teammates to continue where they left off.

“Momentum is something we need,” he said. “Hopefully we can take that into the next game.

“It’s a massive result but we can’t get ahead of ourselves. There’s a long way to go. We just have to keep concentrating on ourselves and taking it game by game.”
