Paul Gustard is hoping Fijian flair will help propel his Harlequins side to victory as they travel to Wasps in Round 6 of Premiership Rugby this weekend.

The Quins head coach has the triumvirate of Tevita Cavubati, Niki Goneva and Semi Kunatani at his disposal this season, players with over 100 Fiji caps between them, who he believes can provide valuable experience to his struggling side.

Gustard’s team crashed out of the Champions Cup last weekend with a disappointing 34-10 defeat at home to Ulster, ending their chances of reaching the quarter-finals and meaning they will direct attention towards Premiership action, where they currently lie eighth in the table.

And as they travel to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday with both Cavubati and Goneva in the matchday 23, the Quins boss says he knows all about the various attributes his international trio bring.

“Semi is an intuitive player and we liked his ability to beat people and get past the first tackler and dominate the gain line,” he said.

“And Tevita has been one of our most impressive summer signings and is a smashing guy who is full of energy and life which is awesome.

“We wanted to make sure there was someone who could be there for Semi, and Tevita is the perfect fit.

“The opportunity to sign Niki was too good to turn down - he is a great guy who has been in England for a long time and can add a lot to our young wings, as he is a guy who has had a career of beating defenders."

Gustard recruited both lock Cavubati and back Goneva from relegated Newcastle Falcons this summer, joining forward Kunatani who signed from Toulouse last year.

But it has been far from the smoothest start to life in a Quins shirt for the ex-Falcons duo, winning just two of their opening Premiership matches and having their European journey cut short prematurely in Pool 3 of the Champions Cup.

Gustard has a reinvigorated squad at his disposal this weekend, however, hoping the return of several players can buoy his side as they head into the important Christmas period.

“As always, we assess the threats and opportunities of the opposition and factor that in to the current health and state of our own squad to make sure we field a competitive team,” he added.

“It’s pleasing to have a number of players starting to return to action following spells on the sidelines, including James Chisholm, Will Collier and Aaron Morris whom will add competition for places.

“We are aware of the threat Wasps possess this weekend, and we look forward to the test that they represent.”
