Thomas Frank laid down an historic gauntlet for his players ahead of Brentford’s match against Fulham on Saturday – and they picked it up with a flourish.

The Bees claimed a 1-0 win over Fulham in what was the last west London derby between the sides at Griffin Park, a result that takes them up to fourth in the Championship table.

And the Danish boss was left purring in his post-match after Bryan Mbeumo’s 22nd-minute strike sealed the points in a match where the hosts could easily have been more comfortable.

“What a performance from the players, unbelievable,” he said.

“We talked before the game about how we needed to outplay them, but definitely one big thing was to outrun them. If you can do that in a game like this with two good footballing sides, we knew we could win the ball and counter.

“It shows a lot about the players’ attitude, determination and mentality. It needs to be in them, but the culture that we have in this club and have been developing; we have that unique togetherness. We work so hard on that desire to defend, but also that attitude in wanting to do more.

“We should have scored more. It would have been a much more relaxed time on the touch-line in the second half. We didn’t want a scrappy goal for Fulham, because that wouldn’t have been fair!

“We talked about before the game, this was the last west London derby between Brentford and Fulham at Griffin Park, so we need to do everything we could, put everything out there, and they did everything they could.”

Eight wins in their last 11 league games have catapulted Brentford up the table after a tricky start had them languishing in the bottom half back in September.

At home, they have lost only once in their last ten – and Frank knows how crucial Griffin Park could be if they are to keep up their promotion push.

“We are in a good place,” he continued.

“We know we are really good at Griffin Park – sides are coming here knowing that they need a top performance if they are going to take anything from us.

“That’s good; we need to keep going; hard work on Monday and onto the next game.”
