To date, Mark Williams is the only Welshman to have won the Welsh Open – and he is eager for the home potters to stamp their authority in Cardiff more.

Williams won the tournament in 1996 and 1999, but no Welsh player has lifted the trophy since.

And the current World Champion wants that to change – either by winning it himself or another of his countryman taking the honours.

“I think it would be good for the tournament if any Welshman had a run, because it’s been so long, it’s unbelievable really,” said Williams.

“None of us have done any good, even us at the top of the game for the last ten years, I keep saying it year after year, and we never produce.

“Twenty years is unbelievable. It would be nice to win it again but I won it 20 years ago, so I can’t grumble.”
