Player-manager Elliott Brown believes running out at the home of a Premiership rugby club for the Secure Trading 24/Sevens south-east regional play off finals will massively fire up his Tornados 7s side.

The Secure Trading 24/Sevens competition, run by the RFU, is a community sevens series which sees the country’s best amateur teams competing across qualifying events followed by four regional competitions.

The Tornados will now head to the Hazelwood Centre on July 15 – the training base of recently promoted Premiership side London Irish – for the chance to make the national finals two weeks later at Bath’s Recreation Ground.

And Brown, who plays at scrum-half during the regular fifteen season, believes the event will provide the perfect backdrop for his players to rise to the occasion.

He said: “I think playing where a professional club play is only going to make us raise our game even higher.

“Going down to The Rec would be such a good experience for the team. A few of us have played at former Premiership academies so we’ve been down to these grounds but going down together as a team is going to be awesome.

“Our aim is to certainly reach the final of the play-offs and reach the national competition. The way we’re going I think we’ve got a good chance.

“We’re taking pretty much exactly the same squad and everyone’s looking forward to it. I think everyone’s very excited to push on for the weekend. I know the team who we played in the local qualifier for the Essex Charity 7s final also qualified, so we know how tough it’s going to be and how we can prepare.”

Speaking about his sides’ success at the Essex Charity 7s, Brown said: “Everything kind of went to plan. The level of competition was as I expected, we just played very well – everyone clicked nicely and everyone wanted it as much as each other. We barely conceded a point all group in the first four games, which was pretty good.”

Following on from the success of last year’s 24/Sevens, the competition this year features three different tiers – elite, open and social.

Sevens rugby is a key part of England Rugby’s work at with Sport England, broadening high quality playing opportunities for all players.

After founding the Tornados with fellow fifteens team mate Nathan Barham in 2014, The Tornados are now in their fourth playing season and are going from strength to strength.

“We sat down one day, thought of a name and it went from there really,” Brown said.

“We set it up, looked for some financial sponsors, bought our kit and now we’re a branded kit team. We work with Speed One Sports and their only international sevens team. It’s getting bigger each year.”
