In the early hours of the morning, fans attending Steve Aoki’s headline set at the Ministry of Sound in London braced themselves for his legendary cake throw. But instead of his usual cream covered cakes, the DJ appeared to throw giant Jaffa Cakes, sending the crowd into a frenzy and posing a fair few questions.
Within minutes, videos of the moment began circulating online as Steve found himself in the middle of one of the UK’s most hotly contested debates: was he throwing a cake, or a biscuit? Given his legacy of cake-throwing, it seems his stance on the debate is clear.
Aoki explained “I’m a big fan of Jaffa Cakes, and since they’re so uniquely British, I wanted to switch things up for my Ministry of Sound gig. Having thrown over 30,000 cakes around the world since 2011, I’m fairly sure only in the UK could a cake throw spark a national debate. The second they started flying into the crowd, everyone instantly understood the reference. That’s when I knew it would be one of those unexpected moments that people would remember.”
The resurgence of this iconic cultural debate comes as Jaffa Cakes finally settled the decades-long debate once and for all, with the recent launch of an actual biscuit in the form of new Jaffa Cakes Digestives.
When asked for a comment in reaction to such an iconic DJ surprising the audience with the iconic Jaffa Cakes, a McVitie’s spokesperson said: “We can’t say watching Jaffa Cakes fly across one of London’s most renowned dance floors, courtesy of legendary DJ Steve Aoki, was on our bucket list for 2026 - but we love it! We’re thrilled to see he’s on the right side of history too. Steve is right. Jaffa Cakes are, and always have been, cakes!”
