HUNDREDS of young people across Ealing will have access to free sports activities this summer.
Everyone Active and Ealing Council have a programme of holiday camps, qualifications and coaching sessions at leisure centres across the borough.
Ealing-raised wheelchair racer Hilmy Shawwal, the first athlete to represent Tanzania in the sport at the Paralympics, will join the final day of an athletics camp for young people at Perivale Park athletics track in August.
Hilmy previously competed for Team Ealing at the London Youth Games before training with the Weir Archer Academy and going on to compete at Paris in 2024.
He is one of Everyone Active's Sporting Champions and will present awards at the camp's closing competition.
The athletics camp, which also includes a free officiating qualification for older teenagers, forms part of a wider summer offer in Ealing.
It also includes a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) course for 16-year-olds, junior gym memberships and a golf camp at Brent Valley Golf Course.
Free places on all of the above are available through the national Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, for children and young people eligible for benefit-related free school meals. Lunch will be provided for children on the scheme.
Lizzie Rice, Activity and Wellbeing Manager for Everyone Active in Ealing, said: "We want young people in Ealing to have the chance to try something new this summer, build their confidence and make friends, whatever their background.
“Having Hilmy join us at our athletics camp will be a brilliant moment - he's proof of what's possible when you start out on a track, just like they are."
The athletics camp runs from Monday to Friday, August 10-14 at Perivale Park, with running, jumping and throwing events before a friendly closing competition on the Friday.
Participants aged 14 and 15 can also complete a free Assistant Track and Field Official qualification run by England Athletics, alongside the camp.
Elsewhere on the programme, the NPLQ course will give successful 16-year-olds the qualification required to work as a lifeguard.
Younger residents can also sign up to junior gym memberships at Ealing sites.
Places are available across the programme in August. Paid-for places are available for those not eligible for the national Holiday Activities and Food programme.
