There were dramatic scenes in a Bradford suburb this afternoon as the air ambulance landed in a busy park after a serious crash on a nearby street.

Debris could be seen scattered across Gaythorne Road, near its junction with Round Street, in West Bowling.

Some distance away, on the other side of a mini-roundabout, a dark coloured car had come to rest near the side of the road, with its front end severely caved-in.

A cordon had been put in place across the street, with police standing guard at either end and officers working within it to establish the circumstances surrounding the smash.

The ambulance service said it received an emergency call at 4.04pm to a collision involving one car.

"Two ambulances, an air ambulance and team leader were dispatched to the scene and one patient was conveyed by road to Bradford Royal Infirmary," a spokesperson said.

The patient is understood to be the driver of the car.

One onlooker said: "I was just walking past and saw a big incident.

"I was in shock and wondering what had happened. I hope they're well, it's a very big incident."

Around half a mile away, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance had landed in Bowling Park on one of the football pitches bordering Parkside Road, after circling the West Bowling area for several minutes.

A large number of curious onlookers surrounded the bright yellow helicopter to get a closer look at the impressive machine.

One resident told the T&A he understood it had been a "very bad" crash.

"There's been serious accident on Gaythorne Road and what's happened is that there was no landing space nearby so it has safely landed here (in Bowling Park)," said the onlooker.

"I seen it land here. I hope everything alright and I hope the person who is hurt is okay," he added.

West Yorkshire Police had not provided a comment by the time the T&A went to press.
