A budding young dog owner followed in her grandfather’s footsteps by showing her Bedlington Terrier at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts.

Myla Mae Hanes, eight, from Doncaster competed with canine companion Mo, continuing the tradition started by grandad Mark Walshaw, 61, who won best of breed with his own Bedlington, T, in 2011.

Mo is the son of T, and  eight-year-old Myla is also keeping it in the family as she made her debut on the famous green carpet on Saturday.

“I was a bit scared because I did want to get first or second and I tried my best to do it,” said Myla.

“I ended up fifth and I was happy with that because I had never participated at Crufts before.

“It feels really good to have showed at Crufts for the first time.”

Myla is just a few months into her career in the ring after being gifted her own Bedlington by grandad Mark.

But now the Doncaster native is fully immersed in the world of dog shows and can’t wait to come back for more next year.

“It seemed to bypass me and went down to the little one, but they have been going to dog shows since they could walk,” said mum Beverly.

“I have got pictures of them round the ring at most of the shows because my dad shows, judges, stewards. It has always been something that we have done.

“One day Myla said she wanted to show dogs and her grandad gave her a Bedlington. We have now ended up with four Bedlingtons!

“It is hard work, not only have I got to groom the dog and make sure they’re nice and clean but we have to make sure the children are nice and clean, hair is done, nice suits. There’s a lot more involved than coming to normal shows.”

“I am more nervous than her, so it’s about trying to stay calm and not pass that on to her. We know what we are doing and it’s just putting it into practice.”
