THE oldest volunteer in the NHS, who works in Ealing Hospital café, was awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours.

It marked the end of an extraordinary 12 months for Beryl Carr, who celebrates her 101st birthday this month.

Beryl gave numerous newspaper interviews and appeared on TV several times last year, with people fascinated by her longevity and appetite to continue volunteering.

The Prime Minister recommended Beryl for the award after she won his Points of Light Award for her work.

“It was a real whirlwind last year and this is a lovely way to finish it all before getting back to normal,” she said.
