Cardiff Met Archers ace Jade Atkin has learnt how expensive being a young athlete can be since taking over the reins from her parents.

But now the 20-year-old wheelchair basketball star from Portsmouth can take on more responsibility than ever after being hand-picked as a SportsAid, Next Generation athlete, fuelled by Aldi.

SportsAid supports over 1,000 young athletes each year by providing a financial award to help with training and competition costs while also delivering personal development opportunities to many athletes through workshop sessions.

Aldi are now working in partnership with SportsAid to support 20 young athletes on their journey to becoming future Olympians and Paralympians – including Moore – and helping them to eat like a champion.

In 2018, Atkin was part of the winning team at the Under-24 European Championships and the following year she helped a Great Britain squad bring back bronze from Thailand at the Under-25 World Championships.

She was competing alongside sister Adele at both tournaments and now recognises the sacrifices her parents made while the pair were growing up.

"When I learnt to drive, my parents straight away said that I was driving everywhere," said Atkin, speaking after filming a new TV advertising campaign for Aldi, who work with Team GB and ParalympicsGB on the Get Set to Eat Fresh programme, helping school children eat healthier and live an active lifestyle.

"I thought that was fair enough and very understandable, so it has been like that for a few years, but it is really hard.

"I didn't understand just how much they did spend on my sport, and now I realise how hard it is, it has made me appreciate the money from SportsAid and other sources that help.

"I have had to spend really wisely and look to budget but I am really lucky because I have had help getting funding."

Each year, athletes are nominated to SportsAid by the national governing bodies of more than 60 sports based on set criteria.

The Aldi-supported athletes will be receiving a £2,000 award through SportsAid. Aldi will also support their 20 athletes with a £25 monthly voucher, to fuel them through training, competitions and to future Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"SportsAid has really helped,” she added.

"I feel really honoured that I have got it and it is something that could really help me and allow me to travel to every event.

"Without it, I do not think I would have been able to travel to certain games because they are really far away.”

Aldi is the Official Supermarket Partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB and have partnered with Team GB since 2015, ParalympicsGB since 2022 and will be supporting them through to Paris 2024
