LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer and deputy Angela Rayner this week joined Rupa Huq MP at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Acton.

They were there to show solidarity in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the country. The leader of Ealing Council, Peter Mason, also attended the church in Newton Avenue.

Proceedings began with a service, conducted in Ukrainian, after which Ealing resident Yuri Bender, a journalist and member of the parish committee, spoke in English.

The former Baptist church was re-consecrated as a Ukrainian Orthodox place of worship in 1978.

Yuri Bender said: “This was the perfect opportunity for members of the Ukrainian community to share their views and concerns with Westminster politicians.

“All of us have family members who are directly affected by the onslaught.”

Rupa Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, added: “I know the church is doing vitally important work to raise funds for the humanitarian effort in Ukraine.”
