A SCHEME to create a community cinema in Acton is a step closer after it received a £1,000 grant.

Acton Arts Project is one of the first winners of the 2021 Give London A Lift campaign hosted by Leyland SDM, the decorating and DIY firm.

Leyland SDM, which has a store in Cowley Road, Acton, is running the materials giveaway competition for a second year to help community groups, organisations and charities.

Acton Arts Project was formed by residents in 2018 with the aim of maintaining the former library in the High Street as a community hub.

The group, which secured a 24-year-lease on the building from Ealing Council, decided to build a cinema, which is just weeks away from opening.

Amanda Mason, one of its eight directors, said: “The old library was a focal point for the community and, when it closed, we were determined not to lose that hub.

“We have had more than 100 local residents volunteering to carry out the work and there has been a great community spirit around the cinema.

“We have a pop-up cinema which will house 60 people and a bar and a café ready to open in late August or early September.”
