With FA Vase success at Wembley still fresh in the memory, Warrington Rylands have the chance to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet this weekend as they compete for the inaugural Pitching In Super Cup.

Dave McNabb’s men travel to FA Trophy winners Hornchurch on Saturday in a contest that will act as a curtain-raiser ahead of the new campaign on August 14.

And the Rylands boss feels it will act as a valuable test for his newly-promoted side, who are preparing for their first season at Pitching In Northern Premier League level.

“Hornchurch are arguably one of the best teams at step three across the country based on their performances in the league and the FA Trophy,” he said.

“I think their feat to win the FA Trophy as a step three club is phenomenal, so it’s going to be a massive test for us.

“But we’re at the entry into what is the new step four structure based on our performances over the last two years and these are the types of games we want to play in.

“We are really excited and looking forward to it."

Rylands downed Binfield in the FA Vase final in May, a matter of hours before Hornchurch took to the field themselves to upset Hereford – the seventh side from a higher division they conquered en route to lifting the trophy.

The idea of bringing the two sides together was spawned by league directors in Wembley’s Royal Box in the aftermath and swiftly supported by league partners Pitching In – a multi-million-pound investment programme set up by Ladbrokes, with the support of owner Entain.

Tickets are priced at £10 for Rylands’ return to the capital while the match will also be streamed online for £5 as both sides make their final preparations for what they hope will be their first completed campaign since 2018/19.

McNabb said: “We thought it’d be something that would be a good opportunity to celebrate what us and Hornchurch achieved last year.

“It straight away captured the imagination and it’s a little bit more exciting than your standard friendlies.

“There’s more to play for and while it’s still technically a friendly competition, it’s another cup to win.”

Pitching In Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris added: “We were looking for something to be a curtain-raiser for the new season.

“With restrictions being lifted, hopefully we’ll be able to have a full and uninterrupted season.

“We wanted to do something that could really grab the attention, so it’s hugely exciting.”
