Anna Burnet paid tribute to partner John Gimson as they struck sailing silver on a day of high seas glory for Team GB.

Burnet and Gimson watched team-mates Stuart Bithell and Dylan Fletcher, plus defending champion Giles Scott, claim gold.

And then joined them on the podium as they secured Great Britain's first-ever medal in the mixed Nacra multihull event.

"It's amazing. The team's had such an incredible day," said Shandon's Burnet, a member at Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club.

"Seeing the boys win their golds before we went out was a bit stressful, with all of the emotion.

I found it hugely inspiring and I'm so happy we're part of this team, which is performing so well.

"I just feel like John's someone who's the most deserving of an Olympic medal of anyone I've ever known.

"He's put so much work into this for so long. To help him achieve that, I'm just so happy."

Gimson and Burnet are world champions in the boat but Italian rivals Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti have dominated all week, leading from the first race of the regatta.

A medal was still far from secure in the final race but Gimson and Burnet got their tactics spot on to claim second spot on the podium.

"There's no way I'd be here without Anna," said Gimson, as both sailors fought back the tears. "She's head and shoulders above the rest and we're unbelievably happy with silver.

"This has been a 20 year journey for me. Twice my discipline got dropped as a class. The second time I'd sold my house and had literally no money. I was questioning my life decisions but it was all worth it, all of it."

However, there was disappointment for Scot Charlotte Dobson, who was in contention in the women's 49er fleet alongside partner Saskia Tidey.

They needed a quirk of results to go their way in their final medal race and settled for sixth in a regatta won by Brazil's Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze.

It was an emotional rollercoaster for Dobson, who moments after crossing the line watched fiancé Dylan Fletcher grab men's 49er gold with partner Stuart Bithell.

Dobson and Fletcher are due to get married later this month but admit planning is ‘behind schedule’ with everything focussed on the Olympics.

"It was very, very stressful to watch," she admitted. "I was really proud of him and he was really confident. He and Stu are an incredible team together, they bring the best out of each other. I can’t be more happy for him.

"We're disappointed with our regatta, to be honest a large part of the damage was done in the last two days in the lighter winds.

"At this level you can’t expect to win medals with holes in your performance and unfortunately we kind of got found out a bit this week in the lighter winds."
