The coronavirus infection rate in Bolton is continuing to rise as more calls are made to bring surge vaccinations to the town.

The Indian variant of Covid-19 is said to be causing the majority of cases in the borough, especially among the under 25s.

This has led to calls from mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, for surge vaccinations to be brought to the area in an effort to vaccinate all over 16s

He told BBC 5 Live this morning: ""The request that directors of public health in Greater Manchester have put to the government is to allow freedom to vaccinate all ages starting in areas that are currently experiencing the outbreak.

"We've asked for surge vaccine supplies into areas where cases are currently highest and have been stubbornly high throughout the pandemic."

In the seven days to May 8, Bolton recorded 467 new positive cases of Covid-19 at an infection rate of 162.4 per 100,000 residents.

This is an increase of over 200 new cases compared to the previous seven days, to May 1, where the town's infection rate was recorded as 83.5 new positive cases per 100,000 residents.

Despite this rise in infection rates, there have been no deaths at the Royal Bolton Hospital for over two weeks, according to NHS England.

Infection rates have also begun to rise in other boroughs of Greater Manchester.

Rochdale, Manchester, Stockport, and Wigan all saw their infection rates rise in the seven days to May 8.
