THE delayed return of students to university campuses in England until at least May has come under fire from Ealing Central and Acton MP Rupa Huq.

Ms Huq, who worked as a university lecturer over three decades prior to being elected in 2015, said it would be too late for many students, with exams to come.

She said those in England were being treated differently to students in Wales, who have been able to return this week.

The Ealing MP said the Gopvernment failed to understand that at institutions like Ealing’s own University of West London [UWL] there would not be a mass movement of students as many lived in the parental home.

Harry Wild, a third-year student at Southampton, was cited by Ms Huq in her question.

Originally from Ealing, Harry has been studying on campus but still learning online since Christmas.

Harry’s mother Natasha said: “My son has, in spite of very challenging circumstances, continued to try to apply himself and make friends.

“To hear you can have haircuts (indoors), go to gyms (indoors) and have very close-contact driving lessons makes this decision even more ridiculous.”
