A cricket club is being given a new lease of life with a project to relay its pitch well underway.

The pitch at Watford Town Cricket Club, which plays at Woodside Playing Fields, has been completely relaid thanks to investment from Watford Borough Council.

The work began on September 7 and has seen the main square being relaid, with tons of loam added to the square and then levelled off.

The outfield pitch has also been improved with new drains, watering points, and grass.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of September, ready for the new season next year.

Andrew Canning, secretary of Watford Town Cricket Club, said: "This is a really exciting project that will bring the ground up to the highest standard. The outcome should be truer pitches with more bounce."

Watford mayor Peter Taylor and Woodside borough councillors Tim Williams and Richard Wenham visited the club earlier this month.

Mr Taylor said: "It is so important that we continue to invest in excellent sport and leisure facilities for our town.

"It was great to see the extent of the works completed at the ground. I know that come next spring, it really is going to be a great surface for Watford Town Cricket Club.

"The club is an important part of our town and it’s fabulous that we are making these improvements that will be appreciated for many years."
