A petition has launched to call on better signage on the A281 after a man from Morden was killed in a road collision.

Pathushan (Pathu) Sutharsan, 20, was pronounced dead after an HGV collided with his bike at around 10.45 am on Guildford Road, on July 22.

It is believed he was taking part in a charity ride with a group of his friends to fundraise for Yemen.

Cheryl Wilde, who launched the petition, says self-closing gates should be installed where the Downslink meets the A281.

Wimbledon Times: Pathu and his friends Pathu and his friends

Cheryl Wilde said: "As a community, this has affected us deeply and we cannot sit by allowing this to potentially happen again.

"It is so tragic that Pathu was so young and participating in a charity cycle set up by himself.

"There isn’t clear warning to the drivers of where the crossing is.

"At the time of the accident there was one sign warning of a road ahead – which is neither obvious nor informative about the type of road.

"We would hate to think we did nothing, and another such tragedy occurs in the future."

The petition which launched on August 4 has racked up more than 4000 signatures, followed by heartfelt tributes.

Pathu's cousin said: "I’m signing because my cousin was an inspiration to all those who knew him and do not want his death to be in vain.

"Much like the selfless act he was partaking in, hopefully, this petition can incite positive change in his name."

A qualified first aider who says she was on the scene, said:

"This day will live with me forever.

"Something needs to be done.

"I’m a highly qualified first aider and I did everything in my power to save this inspirational young man.

"He and his friends will always be in my thoughts and I am so sorry for your loss."

The petition has reached 4,055 signatures at the time of publishing.
