THE number of coronavirus cases identified at mobile sites in Wrexham has been confirmed.

Just under a dozen cases were confirmed to have been identified in the hundreds of tests conducted at mobile units in Caia Park and Hightown.

During the Welsh Government’s coronavirus press conference, Minister for International Relations and Welsh Language Elund Morgan confirmed that 11 positive cases were picked up during the localised testing.

The minister says that this did not warrant a local lockdown that many have called for but that the situation is going to be ‘closely monitored’.

Ms Morgan said: “We certainly haven’t closed off the option of local lockdowns and that I something we are keeping a close eye on. There has been a spike in the Wrexham area and we’ve looked in detail at what has been happening there.

“We have done extensive testing but we have determined that of the 1,418 people that we tested only 11 were positive, which meant we didn’t feel the need to impose a local lockdown in that area.”

Ms Morgan added, however, that this is something the Welsh Government will keep ‘on its agenda’ moving forward and said any localised measures would depend on the spread of the virus.

She said: “Obviously, we would try and restrict it to as close an area as possible in order to not disrupt the lives of other people but we will keep an eye on things.”

The two army-manned centres in Caia Park and Hightown were open for four days after being established on Wednesday, July 29, in response to a spike in cases of COVID-19 in the county borough.

Local testing sites followed reports of some patients contracting the virus whilst staying at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

At its highest, so far, the hospital run by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board had between 70 and 80 patients with confirmed cases of the virus on July 28.

There are also a small number of cases at the community hospitals in Deeside, Mold and Chirk – but, due to the risk of identifying patients, the health board has previously said they will not be providing specific numbers for the three sites.
