A councillor has blasted a “thoughtless” act of fly-tipping after a sofa and other large items were dumped on a street corner.
Cabinet member for licensing and regulatory services Cllr George Savva (Labour, Haselbury) is appealing for information after spotting the fly-tip at the corner of New Park Avenue and Rylston Road, in Palmers Green, on Sunday afternoon (March 29)
As well as a large sofa, the illegal dump includes two vacuum cleaners, a fold-up chair, bags of waste and what looks to be metal fencing blocking the pavement.
It is believed the items were left there on Sunday morning at around 6am.
Cllr Savva said: “At a time when the council and whole country is dealing with a crisis, and local authorities are overstretched, the last thing we want to deal with are things like this, which are easily avoided.
“I don’t know what kind of people could do such a thing. It is a health and safety risk – we do not know what items are in it.”
Cllr Savva pointed out the rubbish was dumped near Tatem Park, which is used by disabled people, parents and children.
He added: “It is bad to fly-tip at any time of the year. Now there is no excuse. They could keep the items until the recycling centre is open again.
“It is not compatible with the way we want to go ahead and beat the virus. It stops people doing essential work.
“It is uncivilised. The actions of some people take us back to the dark ages.”
Cllr Savva appealed for anyone with information about the incident to email him on Cllr.george.savva@enfield.gov.uk. or phone him on 07943 698925. He added that information would be kept in the strictest confidence.
