A former car showroom and MOT garage will be replaced as part of plans to expand a bus depot.

Harrow Council’s planning committee unanimously approved an application in Pinner Road, Harrow, that will see the existing bus garage developed to accommodate 30 extra vehicles.

It comes despite objections from some neighbouring properties, who cited concerns around additional noise and pollution that will come with the development.

They suggested that the installation of a three-metre acoustic fence “does not guarantee that high levels of noise will be eliminated but (may) only be lessened.”

There were further concerns around a possible increase in litter and the idea that those using the depot – primarily staff and visitors – may look to park on nearby roads.

Cllr Stephen Greek, who sits on the planning committee, suggested any travel plan attached to the development could be “beefed up” to ensure that staff are encouraged to use environmentally friendly transport.

A council report noted the move would contribute towards the borough’s “sustainable transport goals” and that plans to mitigate the impact on traffic, as well as noise and pollution levels, have been put in place.

They added that the majority of trips by the additional buses would take place during off-peak hours.
