Harrow Conservatives urged the council to help people feel at ease after research by a medical body showed the borough is among the most stressed in London.

Cllr Chris Mote asked council leader Cllr Graham Henson what the council was going to do to make its residents “happier and calmer”.

It comes after statistics from Babylon Health showed Harrow is the third most stressed borough in London behind Barking and Dagenham and Croydon.

The data was compiled based on the number of “stressed” tweets sent from respective areas.

According to the group, 9.66 per cent of tweets sent from Harrow showed signs of stress, with Tuesday evening considered the most stressful period.

Stress levels in neighbouring boroughs Brent, Barnet, Ealing and Hillingdon came in eighth, ninth, 15th and 23rd places respectively on the London table.

Cllr Henson did not comment on the specific data but suggested any stress experienced by Harrow residents was exacerbated by conditions imposed by central government.

Responding to criticisms of the council’s budget for 2020/21, he explained that it can only work “within the financial envelope available”.

He hit out at cuts to local government funding and said health and wellbeing will improve once these are reversed.

“People get stressed about Universal Credit, worrying about when they are going to get paid,” Cllr Henson said.

“People get stressed about housing, wondering if they are going to be allowed to stay.

“Visit a foodbank and see what people have to say. People are stressed because of the conditions of having to live under this Government.”
