Murals showing moments of sporting and musical history in an underpass leading to Wembley Stadium have been uncovered.

The tiled murals – on Bobby Moore Bridge – had been partially covered up despite calls from the Wembley History Society (WHS) to have them on permanent display.

They will be showcased for a month as part of Brent Council’s borough of culture 2020 programme.

Originally dedicated in 1993 to World Cup winning England captain Bobby Moore, they will be on display until the anniversary of his death on February 24.

Cllr Ernest Ezeajughi, Mayor of Brent, explained the move will give people the chance to celebrate the borough’s “incredible sport and entertainment culture”.

Last year, WHS handed in a petition with almost 300 signatures to the council calling on it to protect the murals in the future.

It came as the council’s planning committee agreed to proposals put forward by developer Quintain that will see ‘light boxes’ installed on Bobby Moore Bridge.

WHS member Philip Grant described the murals as a “heritage asset” and said they are “worthy of protection”.

Residents also pointed out the underpass acts as a gateway from Wembley Park Station and should be used to promote and reflect the area’s history.

Wembley Stadium will host seven matches – including the semi-finals and the final – at this summer’s European Championships.
