Considering that London is the under the most surveillance in Europe, which boroughs can commuters feel the safest?

When travelling the tube, you may be wondering how ‘safe’ you are if an incident were to occur.

A study by ACCL, a cabling service which includes services for CCTV, found that there are 13,596 cameras in operation across the underground.

Over the last five years, the Government funded an extra £21million on existing CCTV funds.

Before that in 2013/14, the Government funded £71million, which was a significant increase from the £53million funded in 2009/10.

So which boroughs in London have the most underground, and which routes can commuters feel the safest as they travel underground?

Barnet

Barnet is the seventh borough with the most CCTV on the underground.

The population of 392,140 is monitored with 636 cameras underground, with 617 people likely to be caught per camera.

This means people travelling through stations in High Barnet, Mill Hill East and West Finchley are more likely to be caught on camera.

Commuters can feel safer due to the large quantity of cameras, with the only boroughs with more CCTV being: Westminster, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hillingdon.

Redbridge

Redbridge is the ninth borough with the most CCTV on the underground, with 587 cameras in the borough’s stations.

518 people are captured through one camera, with the borough having a population of 303,858.

Harrow

Harrow has less surveillance than Barnet and Redbridge but is still the eleventh borough with the most CCTV on the underground.

465 people are likely to be caught per camera on routes through Harrow and Wealdstone, Rayners Lane and Stanmore station.

Ealing Times:

Waltham Forest

In Waltham Forest, there are just 196 cameras in the borough’s stations.

The borough has a population of 276,700, with 1,414 people captured per camera.

Enfield

Like Waltham Forest, there are 196 cameras within the borough’s stations.

With a population of 333,869 people, one camera captures around 1707 people.

Haringey

There are 342 cameras within the borough’s stations.

With a population of 270, 624, one camera captures around 791 people.

This makes Haringey the sixth least monitored borough on the underground.

Epping Forest

In Epping Forest, there are just 342 cameras within the borough’s stations.

With a population of 131,137 people, one camera captures around 383 people.

As a result, Epping Forest is the sixth least watched boroughs underground.
