EALING couple Juliet and Clive Matthews have completed an epic 500km cycle ride from Mumbai to Goa.

Entirely self-funded, the challenge aimed to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) via the Tom Clabburn and Claire Prosser Memorial Fund, set up in 2014.

The Tom and Claire Memorial Fund was first established as Tom’s Fund in 2007 following the sudden death of 14-year old Tom Clabburn from a previously undiagnosed heart condition.

Family and friends, many of them from the Ealing area, including Juliet and Clive, raised funds and awareness in his memory.

Then, in December 2014 Tom’s mum, Claire Prosser, died, also from a heart condition – and, in their memory, the affiliation with CRY continues, through her husband, Paul, Tom’s father, and other family members and friends.

Juliet said: “We met Paul and Claire through neighbours many years ago and they became good friends. I still recall Claire’s wonderful smile and laugh from many nights out.

“We have always been very supportive of the Tom Clabburn Fund and years later, when Claire died in such tragic circumstances, we wanted to do something special to try to raise money for CRY.

“Our own son has benefitted from the screening programme and so have many other fortunate children.”

Tom was one of at least 12 young people (aged 35 and under) who die suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition every week.

Thanks to CRY’s free national screening programme, more than 200,000 young people have been tested, including more than 1,200 people as a direct result of Tom and Claire’s fund.

Clive and Juliet’s epic Mumbai to Goa ride involved cycling the equivalent of London  to Brighton every day, climbing higher than Mount Kilimanjaro. They made it with only one puncture!
