A FREE exhibition taking an in-depth look at one of Gunnersbury Park Museum’s most remarkable items opens on Tuesday (15).
The so-called Acton Top, a decorative fabric quilt created by an Acton family in around 1825, is the centre of attention.
Thought to have been intended as a bed covering, the Top demonstrates a wide range of complex quilting, patchwork and appliqué skills.
It has not been seen by the public for many years after being donated to the museum in 1931.
The donor advised it had been made by members of the Ince family, who lived in Acton in the early 19th century. Beyond this, little is known about its creators.
The focal point is a central square containing an appliqué bowl of flowers, surrounded with butterflies and birds.
