RESIDENTS of a regenerated housing estate in Hanwell are to get exclusive use of a new bike hire dock, to encourage them to leave their cars behind and cycle to work.

The Copley estate in Hanwell is being upgraded by Ealing Council, with new homes for council rent, private sale, discounted market rent and shared ownership.

In a first, Brompton Bike Hire, sister company to the folding bike brand, is providing all social and affordable housing residents with free membership of the hire service.

This will enable them to hire the bikes for the lowest day rate (£3.50), without having to pay an annual fee.

Compared to the lowest price of a Zone 3 travelcard, £8.20, it is a significant saving when travelling into London.

Brompton will also provide cycling experience days at Copley Close to give people the confidence to start riding.

“Cycling is often incorrectly perceived as a middle-class hobby, rather than what it is, an inexpensive, accessible and environmentally responsible method of travel,” said Brompton Bike Hire director Julian Scriven.

“One of the barriers is the outlay on the bike, so we are pleased to offer this service to those considering a bicycle for the first time.”

Ealing Council leader Julian Bell said: “We believe this initiative will encourage the growth of cycling in the area.”
