IT has long been known as the Queen of the Suburbs and is home to the world-famous film studios, but there's a lot more to Ealing’s historical and architectural heritage.

A new book, Ealing in 50 Buildings, explores the history of the borough through a selection of its architectural treasures, from the medieval – the grade one listed St. Mary’s Church in Perivale - to the 21st Century gurdwara in Havelock Road, the biggest Sikh temple outside India.

There are buildings associated with famous people, such as the poor law school which was attended by Charlie Chaplin, public buildings such as St. Bernard’s Hospital, where reforming surgeon, Dr John Conolly worked, as well as mansions designed by John Soane.

Author and historian Paul Howard, who has worked for Ealing library service since the 60s, guides the reader around the borough's historic and modern buildings.

Co-author Jonathan Oates has been borough archivist for Ealing since 1999 and has had more than 20 books published, mostly about aspects of London's local and criminal history.

Ealing in 50 Buildings is available from Amberley Publishing, price £14.99.
