A social worker has been recognised for making a difference to young people.

Marissa McHayle, a personal advisor from Hertfordshire’s Care Leaver’s Team was named the ‘best social worker’ in the annual Young People’s Awards.

The award ceremony organised by The Children in Care Council (CHICC), a young people in care support group, allowed young people in care to nominate social workers, carers and other children’s services professionals for the awards categories of people in care who helped.

CHICC is run by young people and helps people in care to meet others in similar circumstances in events and activities.

Jenny Coles, director of Children’s Services, presented the awards at the ceremony held at Hertford Castle.

The personal adviser said: “It’s an absolute privilege to receive the award. To have a job working with young people, being part of their lives and helping to make a difference, is just amazing.”

Among the attendees was Teresa Heritage, Deputy Leader of Hertfordshire County Council and cabinet member for Children, Young People and families.

Ms Heritage said: “Our social workers have a very challenging role so it’s really rewarding and appreciated when they receive thanks and recognition from the young people they are supporting.

“I would like to thank all our staff for their dedication and hard work to provide the best possible outcomes for our young people in care.”
