Two barbershop choruses are coming together for a special concert.

They were both formed in the 80s, but when the Kings of Herts barbershop chorus and Welwyn Harmony ladies’ a capella chorus sing together in concert this week it will be a historic occasion - their first fully-shared major collaboration.

The close harmony choruses will be performing together on Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30, at the Sandpit Theatre in Marshalswick, St Albans.

An Evening of Musical Delight will present a wide range of songs from different genres, plus glamorous choreography from the ladies, who were recently voted the UK’s most improved chorus in the national ladies’ barbershop championships.

Ken Smith, who directed the Kings of Herts in St Albans’ Christmas Lights streets festival, said: “The choruses have supported each other before but this fully shared collaboration is something different. It is a major challenge but we are loving it and looking forward to the show immensely.”

He added: “It’s a great opportunity for people interested in taking up barbershop to come along and take a look. People may feel they know all about it, but they don’t. It covers so many musical genres, from early 20th century folk, jazz and blues right up to chart-toppers from pop groups and legendary new musicals.”

The concert will raise money for Rennie Grove Hospice Care and Isabel Hospice.
