Take a candle to Harpenden War Memorial to join in on a special tribute to the sacrifices paid by those who took up arms. The Royal British Legion Harpenden Branch has organised the event as part of the national Lights Out campaign.

Read soldiers’ letters to loved ones, hear recorded recollections of how the training camps took over the city and see an embroidered wall hanging made by men receiving treatment at Napsbury war hospital as part of exhibition Keeping the Home Fires Burning. Hosted by the Museum of St Albans, it focuses on how the local community pulled together and includes details about contribution made by St Albans scouts. There will also be a series of events offering the chance to step back in time and hear tales of heroism and heartache from actors portraying characters from World War One.

Have a go at some creative and enjoyable craft activities inspired by the theme 'The First World War Remembered'. Sessions are for ages six to 11 years.

Children will have a chance to create their own version of the puppets from the world famous stage show War Horse during these fun workshops. They will also learn about the roles of animals in the First World War. Suitable for ages seven to 11 years.

Despite the misery of fighting in the First World War, many soldiers were inspired to use everyday items found in the trenches to create amazing pieces of art. These items became known as Trench Art. Inspired by real examples, children at this workshop can have a go at creating their own piece of trench art.
