Andy Murray is waiting to discover who he will face in the final of the US Open tennis championship as he plots his latest attempt for a maiden grand slam title.

The British number one saw off Tomas Berdych in the last four of the competition in a storm-ravaged New York.

But the severe weather forced organisers to postpone the other semi-final between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Spain's David Ferrer.

The tournament's schedule has now been put back a day with the final taking place in Flushing Meadows on Monday.

Olympic gold medallist Murray, who has now made it to five grand slam finals, was congratulated by fellow Scots Sir Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson after his 3-1 win over Czech Berdych

Asked about the stormy weather conditions that also delayed his match, he said: "It was brutal. The ball was moving, stopping, there were chairs flying. They were some of the hardest conditions I've ever played in and I come from Scotland, so that's saying something."

It will be the 25-year-old's second consecutive grand slam final after his Wimbledon loss to Roger Federer, and his first US Open final since 2008 when he also lost to Federer.

After his semi-final victory, First Minister Alex Salmond offered his congratulations.

"The whole of Scotland will be right behind Andy in his next match," he said. "He is already an Olympic gold medallist, and he has what it takes to become a grand slam champion and cement his place as a Scottish sporting legend."
