Madonna has filed papers in advance of adopting a second child from the impoverished African republic of Malawi, officials confirmed.
Reports suggest the 50-year-old Queen of Pop - who adopted son David Banda from the country - will travel to the region over the weekend with a possible court hearing coming as soon as Monday (March 30).
Madonna's spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg declined to comment on the issue, but officials in both the US and Malawi have said an adoption bid is under way.
An official at the Malawian welfare department told the Associated Press that adoption documents had been filed by the singer.
There have been rumours for some time that the Hung Up singer, who was recently divorced from filmmaker Guy Ritchie, was keen to adopt a girl from Malawi, where she runs a charity.
Madonna went to the country to collect David in 2006 and the adoption was finalised in 2008. At the time, it stirred up controversy over foreign adoptions.
The star also has a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from her previous relationship with Carlos Leon, and an eight-year-old son, Rocco, from her marriage to Ritchie.
