England Sevens star Phil Burgess is excited to see the country’s best amateur rugby players showcase their skills at the Secure Trading Sevens Series finals day in Nottingham.

The 30-year-old Olympic silver medallist is expecting an enthralling and entertaining festival of rugby as the competition reaches its climax on finals weekend on June 29 and 30.

His veteran experience, as part of the Sevens set up since 2013, means Burgess is no stranger to fast-paced, exciting tournaments – confident this weekend of rugby will be no different.

“From my own experience of playing in sevens' tournaments, I know the final will be a great event to watch,” Burgess said.

“The atmosphere will be fantastic and it’s not just the sevens final – which will be exciting, entertaining and potentially high-scoring.

“There will be lots of families there to enjoy the atmosphere with food, drinks and hopefully just make the most of the weekend.”

And while the entertainment in Nottingham is guaranteed to be top-drawer, Burgess believes the social aspect is just as important for players and fans alike.

The Frimley native is used to catching up with friends and former teammates at similar events, as well as taking part in the high-octane, fast-paced form of the sport.

“It’s a chance to come across players you have got to know from other teams,” Burgess added.

“The social aspect is awesome because it gives you a chance to catch up with friends – any sevens tournament is awesome for that because you catch up with people you did not know were going to be there.

“It’s great for the family, you don’t have to understand it too much because of how fast and entertaining the game is.”

See some of the country’s best male and female 7s rugby players showcase their skills at the Secure Trading Sevens Series final, as they compete to be crowned national Champions.

Teams will play within 36 regional events winning points along the way, with the 16 highest-ranked male and female teams competing to win the title at The Bay.

As part of a weekend of rugby on 29-30 June, the two-day event will also feature a national O2 Touch competition.

The very best O2 Touch rugby teams from across country will be taking part in the first O2 Touch tournament of its kind on Sunday 30th June. Enjoy a fun-packed afternoon of rugby tournaments, live music and great food.

The Bay will be transformed into a festival-style arena, with live music and activities for all the family as well as an array of food stalls and cask ales and ciders.

Nottingham Rugby’s Chief Operating Officer Steve Smith said: “Nottingham Rugby is proud to host and deliver a broad range of events at The Bay and the Secure Trading Sevens Series final is set to be one of our biggest weekends yet.

Ealing Times:

“Hosting some of England’s best sevens rugby players for a prestigious finals day with a music festival atmosphere is something that I think Nottingham and the region should be excited for.”

One man who expects the teams to put on a show on finals day is England Sevens star Richard de Carpentier.

The 29-year-old is urging fans to come out en-masse to see the pure sporting spectacle as well as enjoy the day out.

“Nottingham is a great venue, the fans always turn out in their droves and the atmosphere is always great,” the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist said.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to get together to support their teams.

“There are not too many Sevens competitions going on in England, so this is a good opportunity to see the cream of the crop perform.

“On top of all the buzz that comes along with Sevens – live music, food and the whole family buzz as well as a chance to have a great time with everyone who is there.”

Tickets for the festival of rugby will cost just £10 per adult and £5 for children, with a family offer for two adults and up to five children for £20.
