THE Olympics may be over, but the spirit of the games lives on in Haxby, where a paralympic torch visited a local supermarket.

The torch was brought to Sainsbury’s in the town as part of a national tour of the Olympic sponsor’s branches, and staff and customers had their photographs taken with it.

Nicola Oliver, store manager, said: “As Sainsbury’s was a Games sponsor, we’re trying to keep the paralympic message alive.

“The Olympic spirit is still alive in the store. We get updates as to what’s happening with the athletes, and they’ve been visiting our stores.”

Six members of staff from the Haxby branch were among 5,000 Sainsbury’s employees who went to the Olympic Park in September, to “turn the park orange”, and watched wheelchair basketball and tennis.

Nicola said: “We all went down wearing our corporate colours, white T-shirts and orange badges. We took pictures with all our colleagues and customers and, and we’ve printed them up free of charge, as a thank you to the community for supporting us.”
