Leanne Ross has lifted the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup six times with Glasgow City - now she wants it back again.

The City skipper curled in a free-kick and laid on the second for Abbi Grant as the eight-time champions cruised past Forfar Farmington 3-0 in the second round.

Ross – a stalwart of the game north of the border as the holder of 133 Scotland caps – is desperate to regain a trophy they last won in 2015.

“The SSE Scottish Women’s Cup is really important for us, to try to and get our hands back on that silverware,” said the 36-year-old, beaten finalist in 2016 and 2017 at the hands of Hibernian.

“It doesn’t matter who we get in the next round. It’ll be the same objective, just keeping our levels of performance high.

“We’ve managed to get through and it was pleasing to get on the scoresheet, with a clean sheet thrown in there as well.”

The right back’s 28th-minute strike was vital in subduing a Forfar side who were dogged opponents in their 1-0 SWPL 1 win in April.

Ross doesn’t practice free-kicks in training, but is proud of dead ball prowess that has seen her net several this term.

“I quite like a free-kick and it was a nice position for me as a right footer,” she said.

“The keeper had the wall lined up quite well, but I managed to get it up and over and it was pleasing to see it land in the far corner.

“It was important to get the first goal to set us on our way, but it could have been more and we need to start converting more chances.”

Ross has seen plenty of top talent come and go since signing at Petershill Park in 2007 and many feel 16-year-old Carly Girasoli is the cream of the current crop.

Girasoli was largely untroubled by the painfully isolated Farmington striker Danni McGinley, but looked composed in everything she did.

Despite the central defender making her first-team bow only weeks ago, her skipper already holds her in the highest esteem.

“Carli has been fantastic,” said Ross.

“She’s embraced the opportunity she’s been given and you can just see she learns every time she trains with us.

“She can go all the way to the top. It’s up to her how far she goes in the game but she’s got the right attitude and works very hard.”
