Liverpool are on the verge of something special under Jurgen Klopp and will challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, according to former Red Igor Biscan.

The 40-year-old believes it’s a matter of when not if Klopp delivers silverware to Anfield despite their disappointing 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League this year and failed to get beyond the fourth round of the domestic cup competitions but enjoyed a historic run in Europe.

The last trophy they lifted came back in 2012 but Biscan is confident that more league and cup success is just around the corner for Klopp’s talented squad.

“They’re too good not to have trophies,” he said. “I believe they can compete for the title next season and of course all the cups and in the Champions League they’re always one of the favourites.

“Eventually they will win something for sure, because of the quality of their football and the style of play which is very important for the fans.

“Everything is there, the passion, the relationship between the fans and the team is so positive, everything is going in the right direction and it will happen for sure.

“I’m not one to say what he (Klopp) needs to do, it’s not normal for me to speak about a coach who is so successful, but it will happen, it’s just a matter of time before it happens.”

Liverpool have spent no time dwelling on the disappointment in Kiev with the signing of Monaco midfielder Fabinho to replace the outgoing Emre Can.

The Brazilian is not part of the national squad for this summer’s World Cup but Biscan is confident he’s an astute piece of business by Jurgen Klopp.

“The club want to make themselves better and go forwards. I believe Fabinho is a good player and a good signing, I like him and I believe it will make the squad and the team much better,” he added.

“Everything they did last season deserves a lot of respect, the football they played the emotions they gave to the fans all over the world was amazing, we are all just proud of them.”

Fabinho’s international teammates will be in Liverpool this Saturday to take on Croatia as both sides step up their preparations for the World Cup in Russia this summer.

Biscan is expecting a high-quality game at Anfield and is boldly predicting that his country can replicate their incredible third-place finish at France 1998.

He said: “I believe we have the quality and experience. For this group of players this is their last chance to do something big, the public expects this generation to come close to the famous side of 1998.

“I think they have enough quality to replicate 1998, if you analyse the teams they play at, the roles they have in those team you will understand they are on the same level as those players were.

“If they start well and win their first game and start to build a positive atmosphere around themselves then everyone will jump on board and anything is possible.”
