Brentford manager Dean Smith believes his players have the momentum to reach the play-offs after Neal Maupay’s 94th minute equaliser at Fulham extended the Bees' unbeaten run to six league games.

Three straight wins prior to their Craven Cottage visit had moved Brentford back into play-off contention and after Maupay’s late header they are four points off sixth-placed Millwall with three games left to play.

Smith admitted that he would have preferred to have picked up a few more points, but felt the pegging back west London rivals so late will give them the impetus they need to push on.

"We don’t feel we have the points tally that we should have but we are still hanging on in the play-off race," he said.

“These players will fight tooth and nail to try and get in there.

“I felt we probably just shaded the game here and should have won, it certainly gives us momentum.”

Brentford had the better of an exciting first half, with Florian Jozefzoon and Yoann Barbet going close, but Fulham took the lead on 70 minutes through Aleksandar Mitrovic’s curling strike.

The Bees stuck at it and were rewarded when Jozefzoon nodded back across goal for Maupay to snatch a late point.

Smith said: “I thought it was the least we deserved to be honest.

“We played ever so well in the first half especially, we were aggressive and I was brave in terms of the team selection.

“Neal does very well coming off the bench and he’s worked very hard for no reward over the last few games.

“I half joked before the game that I wanted him to come on, score the winner and stick his fingers up at me for not starting him.”

Despite not managing to win, Smith was delighted with his players’ team spirit and was particularly pleased to have given the fans something to cheer about ahead of Saturday’s clash with QPR, a second west London derby in two weekends.

Smith said: “The supporters will go home with big smiles on their faces. It was great to see them celebrating there at the end. I think that’s as much as I have celebrated a goal before. I certainly enjoyed that because I felt we deserved it.”
