Max Whitlock has shown Nile Wilson the way – and now the Leeds gymnast admits he is desperate to follow his teammate’s path and turn Commonwealth crowns into world and Olympic glory.

Wilson completed a remarkable games on the Gold Coast by outperforming even his illustrious teammate Whitlock.

The Leeds gymnast finished with five medals, three gold and two silver, in the Coomera Indoor Sports Arena.

Four years ago, Whitlock also scooped three golds and five medals total in Glasgow and then translated that to double Olympic gold in Rio and two world titles on the pommel horse.

And Wilson – already an Olympic bronze medallist in Rio – is confident that he too can rise to be the very best in the world and not just the Commonwealth.

“Looking ahead, I really want to go and do what Max did, become world champion and Olympic champion and it is so exciting.

“I am so happy with how it went and I loved every second of it out there.

“Two weeks ago I didn’t know if I would be competing in the all-around because I am currently nursing a hand injury.

“But I managed to put together a routine on the pommel which wasn’t so strenuous so to win the title was so special.

“The all-around was the pinnacle really of a very gruelling schedule, I am exhausted right now but I got through it across the board and put together some of my best gymnastics.”

While British gymnastics continues to thrive, one of Wilson’s main objectives for Tokyo 2020 will be getting a team medal.

England secured the team all-around gold in Australia last week, but in Rio they failed to replicate their bronze from London 2012.

“The biggest focus is the team, if you look at what we did this week and the score we posted, we can go to Tokyo and really focus on that team medal,” he added.

“The boys smashed it and the way we carried ourselves in that team event is so exciting moving forward to the Europeans, world championships and the Olymmpics to challenge the best in the world for that title.

“Four years ago gaining that experience in Glasgow was a massive stepping stone to Rio and it is nice to come as more of an experienced member whereas guys like Courtney (Tulloch) and James (Hall) it is their first multi-games event, so to share it with them is nice.

“We have trained together since we were ten years old – that made it even more special.”
