Ian Holloway lamented his side’s defeat against Sheffield United on Tuesday night with the R’s boss convinced his side should have got something from the game.

A below-par first-half display saw Holloway’s men go into the interval 1-0 down, with Richard Stearman’s goal the difference between the sides.

John Lundstram doubled United’s lead early in the second period, but Luke Freeman’s fine effort halved the deficit after the hour mark.

Rangers pushed and probed for an equaliser, but Chris Wilder’s promotion-chasers held on, much to the displeasure of Holloway.

“It was a good performance but the result wasn’t what we wanted,” Holloway said. “We could’ve - and should’ve - got something from that game.

“For their efforts, I’m devastated for the lads that we didn’t get anything.

“They’re a very good team. We’re not far off it. But I’m absolutely gutted.

“We switched off for their first goal. We switched off for a split second and it cost us, dear.

“For the second goal we got cut open but then after that, we were the better team.

“We got one back through a brilliant goal. We created some good chances late on in the game.

“We’ve got to start believing we can win these kinds of games away from home because we’re certainly playing well enough.

“I’ll take the performance and the spirit that we showed again. I can’t criticise my lads. They kept going and going.

“But we’re going home with nothing and that’s what disappoints me more than anything else.

“We’ve got to learn and learn quickly about getting results away from home.”
