An angry Dean Smith admitted his Brentford side were the architects of their own downfall as out of form Hull City came from behind to win in Humberside.

The Tigers had parted company with Leonid Slutsky earlier in the week and were under the tutelage of new boss Nigel Adkins for the first time.

It looked like Brentford would heap more misery on Hull after David Meyler’s own goal two minutes into the second period gave the Bees the lead.

However, efforts from Kamil Grosicki, Sebastian Larsson and Jackson Irvine shell-shocked the west Londoners, who grabbed a late consolation through John Egan’s header.

The defeat left the Bees in 13th as they seek the consistency which has been lacking so far this season.

And Smith did not mince his words as he acknowledged his charges should have come away from East Yorkshire with at least a point.

“The goals were definitely avoidable,” admitted Smith. “Neal Maupay gave a soft free-kick away which we defend ok but the lad which hits one which is a wonder-strike.

“I will have to look back at it but Daniel Bentley might think he can do better with one from 30 yards. Then Josh Clarke gives the ball away down the line and they break through. We never get a tackle in.

“I think Frazier Campbell might be offside as he goes for the ball: he doesn’t get it, but he certainly interferes with our players.

“I have to be honest that they have created two or three chances in the second-half where we have given them a helping hand.”
