Harlequins have thrown their support behind a new grassroots engagement initiative from England Rugby and Premiership Rugby designed to increase participation in under-represented communities.

Project Rugby will specifically engage Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people, people from low socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people, aged 14-24 with rugby union.

Aiming to reach 12,000 participants by next summer, Quins and 13 other clubs will now provide accessible opportunities to play rugby in more than 200 community locations across England.

Transitioning new players and volunteers into local grassroots rugby clubs, the Twickenham Stoop-based club is hoping to tap into a new player and fan base never previously seen before in the sport.

"We’re fully behind Project Rugby and its aim of bringing the game to new audiences in Twickenham," said Paul Wilson, Harlequins Foundation Manager.

"Our club plays a prominent role in the local community so it’s important that people view the game and Harlequins as inclusive and open to anyone.

"We’re looking forward to changing perceptions of rugby union currently held by those who may not traditionally think the sport is for them.

"Our Project Rugby initiatives within the community will give new players the chance to enjoy the fantastic benefits of rugby, hopefully creating fans for life and helping the game grow further in Twickenham.”
