RICHARD Wigglesworth insists there is no reason to fear his Saracens career coming to an end – so long as he keeps up the hard work on and off the pitch.

The 33-year-old has been an Allianz Park regular since 2010, closing in on the 156 appearances he made for Sale Sharks in a career already spanning 15 years.

But with his name on the team sheet of the Aviva Premiership Rugby and European Rugby Champions Cup holders, Wigglesworth is not keen to hang up the boots anytime soon.

Yet the scrum-half knows it’s a task far from the easiest, determined to put in the work that has already seen him amass 27 England appearances.

“The league gets better and tougher every year, so if I don’t improve then I’ll get left behind,” he said.

“I want to play on as long as I can and the only way I can do that is keeping in good nick and looking to improve.

“Luckily you never stop learning, I’ve been looked after by the club with game-time over the past couple of years, and there’s a desire to keep playing with the mentality that has seen Saracens lifting trophies.

“We’ve got a clear philosophy, something that’s been drilled in us for seven years, and we never lose sight of the basics which is very important.”

Wigglesworth was speaking at the launch of this year’s Aviva #DriveSafer campaign alongside team-mates Schalk Burger and Schalk Brits.

As part of the campaign, Aviva and all 12 Premiership Rugby clubs are highlighting the dangers of dangerous driving caused by distractions, with a particular focus on the use of mobile phones.

And with his England and Saracens career  leading him to become a role model within the sport, Wigglesworth feels it is only right that he is in place to put across the right messages.

“It’s great that the club is supporting Aviva’s #DriveSafer campaign,” he added. “I have a family and it is just as important that I drive safely as it is for others around me to be driving safely as well.

“It’s important for these campaigns to be in place, and I’m delighted to be able to lend my support to it.

Heading into the business end of the season, Wigglesworth is calling upon his side to make the step up to hit their full potential.

And with an Anglo-Welsh Cup semi-final to support their European Rugby Champions Cup last-eight berth, it’s a call that is certainly being heeded so far.

But with Wasps threatening their Aviva Premiership Rugby crown, the 33-year-old knows they can’t be resting on their laurels just yet, with numerous players absent with England during the RBS 6 Nations.

“We’ve got a tough period with the internationals away and a few injuries, but we’ve done well in the weeks leading up to this and we’re looking to up that in the next few games,” he added.

“Hopefully the lads can bring back some momentum from England, and the consistency we have in the club to hit the heights and put ourselves in that position to do well.

“The last few years we’ve given ourselves the chance and we’ve been picking up the silverware.

“Everybody knows what they’ve got to do and the way that they do it, a lot of the guys have grown up knowing the Saracens way and it’s great for the club to have bought into that.”
