Kirsty Gilmour can add a first Olympic win to her resumé after she defeated Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet at Rio 2016.

It was a fairly route win for the 11th seed, who took the first game 21-17 in 24 minutes before taking the second 21-15 in more comfortable fashion to seal the straight-game victory.

The 22-year-old must next face Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri in her final group game with a victory guaranteed her qualification for the round of 16 knockout phase.

And after getting the job done Gilmour believes she can now look at pushing on.

“It feels really, really good just to get that first one checked off,” she said.

“We’ve been here a long time, much longer than before any other tournament. We’ve had eight days just stewing and waiting for this so it’s nice to get that under the belt.

“I was a little bit nervous when I came on court but I have some strategies in the first few points to get that rhythm and peace and settle on court.

“I would be content with living up to my seeding, that would be a good place for me to be but once you get to hat place you always want that one more.

“My aim will be to get through the group stage and go all out in the last 16 should I get there.

“It is going past in a whirlwind just now but I am sure I will look back on it as so far it’s been nothing but good stuff.”
