Motorsport lover Fergus Walkinshaw admits he cannot wait to put his own spin on this year’s Silverstone Classic by undertaking a restoration of a first-generation Range Rover.

Now in its 26th year, the Silverstone Classic is firmly established as the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, attracting more than 1,100 race entries.

As the son of late motorsport icon and team owner Tom Walkinshaw, Fergus is certainly no stranger to the motoring world and has even raced competitively himself.

Nowadays the 25-year-old, who lives near Chipping Norton, runs his own company FW Motorsport which also deals in classic restorations.

And from July 29-31 he will be busy at work after being approached by eBay, the official parts and accessories partner of Silverstone Classic, to help restore a 1982 classic Range Rover in what is being described by event organisers as RESTORATION LIVE.

Walkinshaw and his team will guide the crowd through every step of the project as they renovate the iconic first-generation Range Rover using only items bought from eBay before it will then appear on stage during the Mike Brewer Car Clinic on the Sunday.

“It’s going to be crazy busy but fun,” he said. “I’ve got a good team of guys who are going to be working with me and hopefully we’ll be able to get it done in time.

“It’s brilliant to be involved with eBay, especially on a project like this. There are so many car parts available on the site and especially for a classic restoration where some parts aren’t made any more and they’re a lot trickier to find, eBay is often the best place to find the unusual items.

“We’re going to be stripping it right down to component form and then doing a full restoration from the ground up. We’ll be doing it throughout the weekend so people can come along and see it during different stages.”

A must-do event for classic car enthusiasts and their families, the Silverstone Classic drew a record crowd of more than 100,000 in 2015.

The three-day festival will feature the very best of historic racing covering more than eight decades of motor sport, as well as live music from the likes of the Stranglers, Reed and The Boomtown Rats and a wealth of family entertainment including a free vintage funfair.

And Fergus admitted he was looking forward to soaking up the whole atmosphere.

“I’ve been to the Silverstone Classic before but never actually on this kind of level, it’s more just to view it so it’s exciting to be taking part. It’s a great race weekend,” he added.

“My dad was Tom Walkinshaw. He definitely helped me to get into the sport before with him being so heavily involved. I’ve made my own path in the sport though and really enjoy the car restoration side of it.”
