Former Brentford winger Ricky Shakes has revealed he is prepared to travel three-and-a-half hours to training to relaunch his career in the Blue Square Premier with Wrexham.

The 23-year-old was told boss Andy Scott would not be renewing his contract last month, but has not exactly been flooded with requests for his services next season.

Shakes was a regular in the Bees' line-up last season, starting 25 league games and hitting three goals, including a brace against the soon-to-be relegated Dragons in April that he thought would land him a new deal at Griffin Park.

But now the Welsh club are the only side with an offer on the table for the former Swindon Town man.

And Shakes, who has spent the summer in limbo, is determined to make the most of the situation by making the seven-hour round-trip to north Wales from his Brixton home.

"I know I had a bit of shaky start to the season, but I was involved week in, week out by the end, so I thought I had done enough to stay another year," he said.

"It has got to the stage now where I have got to take anything I can get, really, because pre-season is only a couple of weeks away.

"Wrexham are the only side to have shown an interest.

"There is nothing else on the table, so that looks like the most likely option at the moment.

"I see moving down a league as a challenge for me to try and push myself back up the ladder again to where I was.

"I did the same sort of travelling when I was at Bolton Wanderers so I am just going to have to do it again. It is what I am prepared to do to play."

Brentford's transfer activity has gone quiet since early summer swoops for Blackpool's Marcus Bean and non-league prospects Sam Woods and Moses Ademola.
