Thomas Frank called for FA Cup replays to be scrapped after Brentford’s 1-1 draw with Wolves on Friday night.

The Bees played the majority of the match against 10 men following Joao Gomes’ early red card but were unable to hold on to a lead given to them by Neal Maupay.

Tommy Doyle’s thunderbolt ensured the sides will meet again at Molineux next week, much to the dismay of the Brentford boss.

“I don't understand why we have a replay,” he said.

“If the Wolves manager was in here talking to the media he would also say why play a game there.

“I simply don't understand the idea of replays.

“But we can only blame ourselves that we didn’t go through to the next round today. When you play 11 against 10 for 80 minutes, you’ve got to win. End of discussion.

“We know it’s not that easy. Credit to Wolves, it’s the classic example of a team with a momentum, and a team not with momentum. It’s down to quality today. Simple.

“Some nice moves but not efficient; we didn’t create enough chances.”

Frank went on to describe a replay as ‘the worst outcome’ for his team, who are facing a battle to avoid the drop in the Premier League, but his views attracted criticism from fans on social media given Brentford’s own past.

As a club who were in League One a decade ago and League Two as recently as 2009, Brentford would previously have been in a position where a replay against a Premier League side would have offered a much-needed financial boost.

Friday’s clash was a heated one at the Gtech Community Stadium and Wolves boss Gary O’Neil felt the match should have been 10-a-side following Mikkel Damsgaard’s challenge on Doyle inside the opening half an hour.

But on a third round weekend featuring several controversial VAR calls, not least Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s sending off in Everton’s draw at Crystal Palace, Frank felt the officials were correct.

"I don't think it's a red, just like I don't think Calvert-Lewin is a red,” he said.

"There are several incidents where you pause the footage and it looks like a red. If you give these, it is not a contact sport, which is a problem."

Both Brentford and Wolves will find out their potential fourth round opponents when the draw takes place prior to Monday night’s clash between Wigan and Manchester United.
